The Role of Epithelial Cells in Human Umbilical Cord Lining
Most attention in cord-tissue science goes to the mesenchymal stromal cells of Wharton's jelly. But the cord has another resident population that the whole-tissue approach preserves: the epithelial cells of the cord lining — and the case for keeping them is a case about context.
A distinct population
Cord lining epithelium is developmentally distinct from the stromal compartment, with its own marker profile and its own documented capacities in the literature. These cells are characterizable in their own right — they are not passengers.
Why whole tissue keeps them
An isolation protocol that purifies a single cell type discards every relationship that cell had with its neighbors. Whole-tissue preparation takes the opposite bet: that the native architecture — stromal cells, epithelial cells and their signaling context together — is itself part of what the tissue offers. The epithelial fraction is retained not by accident but by design.
